About me

My name is John Cropper. I live in Oxford, in the UK and I have been historical fencing for a couple of years now at the  Linacre School of Defence. Our smallsword fencing follows the method of Sir William Hope and you can learn more about this by following the link.

However, I have had a long personal and professional attachment to Spain. I worked in Madrid for ten years. My wife is Spanish and my daughter was born there.

When I learned about a ‘Spanish method’, my curiosity was piqued. I asked around and no-one knew of a translation or much about an interpretation. I am sure that some have studied how to apply his methods and I would love to learn from those that have. In consequence, I decided to have a go and translate and then work out how to interpret Don Manuel’s work.
