Chapter 5: On simple movements

On simple movements

Comment/Interpretation:

Chapter V describes simple movements of the arm and weapon. Again, these are repeated throughout the text He also describes thrusts and cuts. The latter is important as cuts form part of the Don Manuel’s approach to smallsword, linking French and Italian styles with Spanish destreza, which included rapier cuts.

Translation:

There are six simple movements that need to be known: moving the sword upwards[1], moving the sword downwards[2], moving the sword sideways[3], moving the sword to the centre at a right-angle[4], moving the sword backwards[5], moving the sword forwards[6]. Three are positional and three are action oriented. In order to apply these effectively, we need to start with a right-handed fencer standing at right angles and with his feet in the first position. When he raises his arm and sword upwards.

Every type of thrust has to be called penetrating wound and the other two are cutting wounds as these are carried out with the edge of the sword.

[1] Upwards: violento

[2] Downwards: natural

[3] Sideways: remiso

[4] To the centre at a right-angle: de reducción

[5] Backwards: extraño

[6] moving the sword forwards: accidental

Original Text:

CAPITULO V.
